Woolly Mammoth Ivory Pens
For
millions of years the woolly mammoth roamed the lands we now know as Alaska and
the Yukon. Today, some of the most cherished remnants of this mighty beast are
rare deposits of their fossilized ivory.
Buried by glaciers during the last ice age,
this ivory has taken on beautiful patterns and colors from the arctic soil and
makes an extraordinary alternative to protected elephant ivory.
We, at Woodpens.com, delight in ivory as it
adds an entirely new dimension to the art of penmaking. Ivory is solid,
dense, and beautiful. It is also a material not readily available to
penmakers and even less available to purchasers of fine quality pens. You
will be nothing short of delighted with the fossil woolly mammoth ivory which is
10,000+ years old.
The
woolly mammoth ivory tusks are cut into pen blanks which are carefully drilled
and then turned on a lathe. Each
pen is sanded smooth using seven different grits of sandpaper through 2000 grit.
It is then finished with a friction polish that includes shellac, carnauba wax
and bees wax to provide a lustrous glossy finish. Our turning chisels must be
sharpened several times during the making of each pen to keep them sharp enough
to cut through the dense ivory to form your pen.
A certificate of authenticity is included with
each purchase of a woolly mammoth ivory pen.

Due to the eventual cracking in the ivory of
several of our ivory pens, we have discontinued Mammoth Ivory from our
regular selection. We now only use ivory in accents and inlays on our
pens.

I just got back from Maryland today,
and the package was awaiting me. The ivory has a terrific grain, weight,
and color. The light beige is fantastic. I really like the
Signature style pen. It looks really neat and is perfectly balanced.
The twist mechanism works well, and I look forward to using the pen
for many years. Nice work for sure. Anyway, this pen is
certainly my finest.
Thanks again for making such a great pen.

Oh Jim, I'm just
drooling all over my keyboard at that pen!!! Wow, I wish you wouldn't show
me things like that! It's too beautiful, and the satin gold is just
gorgeous with the ivory. I'm going to have to turn off my computer now
before I go spend all the grocery money on dead elephant stuff.
Congratulations on your work of
art!
